Personally, I do not like to eat something heavy before an exercise. However, if I do not eat, I will feel faint and light-headed. So I usually eat a banana before I exercise.
Just make sure to not have anything heavy for 2 hrs before exercising and just before exercising you can take dates, honey, some dried fruits. These items will give you a sudden release of energy along with happy hormones to push yourself.
