Counting to five when I breathe in and out, really helps me to focus on my breath, counting takes my mind off other things. It’s a good way to start meditating. The more used to it I become, the easier it is to meditate.
I think it depends on what you were trying to achieve. you can find different exercises that may help you in ways you are struggling. As I am an extrovert, I often struggle with finishing other peoples sentences and interrupting. To work on this I slowly count to 60 multiple times during the day. Initially by the time I reached 20 I was interrupting myself with thoughts of what needed to be done during the day. As you practice not interrupting yourself, it becomes easier to not interrupt others.
