I’m so disorganized, I’m doing the clutter journey and I don’t know how to start. What helps keep you focused on task and how do you just start especially re: clutter?

I pick one area at a time to declutter and I set a timer

Sometimes I set a bell to chime that brings me back to focus.

Honestly, just start. Maybe out headphones on try to finish before 3 songs end. That can be anywhere between 7 to 15 minutes.

That’s my greatest challenge. I try Marie Kondo getting inspired but it’s a daily struggle. I try doing it by section. I bring in someone to help me with my organization. But ultimately, everyday I have to look at it like eating an elephant. I can’t seem to organize the mess I feel surrounded by since retiring. I have three filing cabinets to thin then destroy and as long as it’s not fully done, I feel bogged down mentally so I just have to tackle it as if I’m eating an elephant… one bite at a time. And gradually I notice it’s getting done. But I have to Declutter daily or I fall so far behind. Everyday, I eat that elephant. Put on my favorite music, and set my timer. Then reward myself by dabbling in Art a little bit and that’s how I do this dreaded task day by day.

Honestly I’m still in your place. And I can relate to it. Recently I have been trying morning routine to keep be anchored. I do some meditation and then use my journal to write down things I’ll do. This has helped me. I think maybe you can use the writing down technique? Just sit and chart what you want to declutter and try to check one or two in that list everyday. All the very best.

I don’t have clutter anymore, thankfully. It’s difficult for me to remember what it was like, it’s been many years ago. But, I think I started with one room first. Then, quickly moved to the other rooms. Otherwise, the clutter would end up back in the first room. I sort stuff into three piles: “out”, which is anything that leaves my house, either charity, rubbish or something similar; “storage”, which is stuff I don’t want to get rid off but don’t need to use; and “use”, which then needs to be organized in my space. By having the piles it allows stopping points if I’m distracted or busy. The important part is to come back to it. Now, “decluttering” really is more tidying. But, there is the pantry that does need reorganisation from time to time. I do have a checklist that I follow, yearly I go through my clothes, make up, medications, those kinds of things. It all keeps my home clutter free 😊

I declutter by doing one area at a time. I start with my desk and go through all my mail. I put my bills in a small pile and throw everything thing else away. Catalogs, magazines, once my desk area is cleaned up, I start on another area like my kitchen counters. For me breaking it up into small areas helps me not feel overwhelmed. I also have to stop myself from going off on tangents. To stay focused on the task at hand. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!
