Weekdays are easy peasy for me to discipline my self to follow the routine but weekend are bad. How to maintain the habit during the weekend?

Rosemary S.
I struggle with sticking fully to my routines on the weekends as well.

I’ve found that I’m much more likely to stick to my habits when I go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time, even on weekends.

This is hard, because I want to stay up late and do something enjoyable or work on a passion project. But the nights where I tell myself I can go to bed on time and wake up on time, I can do those things during the day instead of late at night, my weekends go much better.

I also found that when I do this, I’m generally more productive, because I’m more alert during the day and don’t make much progress on my passion projects when I’m tired at night. Late at night I get distracted and waste time on the Internet instead of actually progressing.

But other times I do get a second wind and feel the creativity of the night and quiet house, and I do what I want anyway. It just makes the next morning out of sync, and that tends to affect the whole rest of the day.

It gets really bad when the trend continues from Friday into Monday I’m not refreshed due to lack of sleep, but have to jump into the week anyway.

I hope this helps! Good luck finding what works for you.

I just try to keep some sort of routine or tell myself I’ll feel better going into next week knowing I’ve done the extra session. If I don’t I try add an extra 10 mins into each session during the week so I can get by with half an hour if needed the weekend.

It may drive you crazy to not have all the weekly checks on this app, but I don’t think taking weekends off is so bad! Diets have cheat days if they are going to be long term and actually stay – I think about it kind of like that. Otherwise, notice and focus on how good you feel after you do your routine to motivate yourself. Just starting and getting it out of the way as soon as you wake up helps too. You could even do a shorter version and build it up or not – like instead of a 20 min workout just do a 5 or 10.

On the weekends, Saturday should be your day to wake up a little later than normal. But on Sunday you should get back into your routine to help prepare for the week ahead!

I personally think it’s easier to maintain a habit during the weekend because you have more time to focus on it and not get lost in the amount of other daily tasks

Be flexible with your expectations of your weekend. If you crave extra sleep for example, allow yourself it. Wake up and start your routine at a later time. Weekends are for rest and we can treat them that way. But dont give up your routine entirely. Give your body what it wants within the boundaries of your best judgment
