Personally I find it really hard to block out all distractions, so for me to mediate for more than 10 minutes is a real challenge.

Not hard at all. All you need is a quiet place to sit, for me I like nature sounds when I meditate but pick something that suits you best. And focus on something, you can focus on your breathing or focus on your body or focus on inside you. For every time a thought comes don't rush it away but be aware of it and slowly push it Away. It's fine if you don't get it the first time just keep practicing start with 5 minutes and work your way up. Hope this works
