I walk and hike a lot for most of my exercise. And I’m a little scared of going to a gym. What simple steps can I take to work my upper body?

You can always try planks. They’re great for the whole body. Start easy, like 1 min more every couple of days. Then I really like wall push-ups :)

The breast stroke works your pectorals, and lifting weights can be done at home too. Use one-handed weights for safety. To work the triceps, pushups are effective.
