How do you keep the mind focused while meditating?

I start with distractions from the environment: I go to a room where I am alone, it’s at night so there’s minimum outside noise, I don’t have TV etc. If I find myself struggling to concentrate I close my eyes or I fixate on my meditation sheet where I have written down my affirmations.
