I love learning, so I generally pick books with info that I want to know more about. As far as fiction is concerned, my taste is eclectic, but I always want to expand the boundaries of my imagination, and creative possibilities. I am a writer and therefore the reading process is crucial for me to not just up my own game, but to be part of the literary community. I make little rituals of my reading- a book will have it's own bookmarks, it's own quirky note-taking or marking system, and its own preferred set of simple stationery like a particular colour of highlighter or a pen. These help, too!
