I often feel my best immediately when I wake up and get to the gym. Eating food before can make me feel sluggish and sick if I attempt to workout soon after. The best time to eat overall though, is 2-3 hours before your exercise. If I have a full stomach while exercising, I feel sluggish and my reflux acts up.
