So it is good to give the book a chance. However, if it is too unpleasant to keep reading it, maybe is not the time. Stop reading it and start with another. Maybe in the future when you try to read that book again you find it more appealing. I think if its a series yes, but if its a stand alone not really. However, it might just be the mood you are in at that moment.  Maybe pause for a few weeks or read a different book and then come back to it. I am an avid reader. If the writing is hard to read (like Tolkien is for me) I would say put it aside and try again later. I once read a book by an author I love. It took me several attempts to get into the book because of the way the first chapter was written. I have now read all the books in the series. Reading should be enjoyable.
